Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Dum Dum, Saugata Roy, was admitted to a private hospital in Belgharia on Wednesday night after his health deteriorated. Around 9:30 PM, Roy felt unwell while en route to inaugurate a temple in Ariadaha on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors carried out a full medical assessment and decided to implant a pacemaker.
Hospital sources confirmed that the 77-year-old leader underwent necessary examinations before doctors implanted the pacemaker to regulate his heart function. He has been kept under observation in isolation as a precaution against infection. His condition has been declared stable by the attending medical team.
West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu and Baranagar TMC MLA Sayantika Banerjee visited the hospital to check on Roy’s condition. Sayantika Banerjee said, “He has been kept in isolation to prevent the risk of infection. His condition is currently stable.” Access to him has been restricted for health and safety protocols.
Roy had previously experienced a health-related episode on March 10, shortly after the Parliament session ended. At that time, he complained of excessive sweating and weakness. Parliamentary staff assisted him in exiting the premises in a wheelchair. He was later taken to Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where an ECG was conducted, but he was not admitted.
Saugata Roy is a senior politician with the Trinamool Congress and currently serves as the MP from Dum Dum in West Bengal. A former professor of physics at Ashutosh College in Kolkata, he holds degrees in physics and law. He previously served as Minister of State for Petroleum and Chemicals in 1979 under the Charan Singh government and as Minister of State for Urban Development from 2009 to 2012 during the Manmohan Singh administration. He is currently a member of various parliamentary committees, including the Rules Committee, the Standing Committee on Finance, and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence.
